Strengthening investigations and adjudication of virtual assets – TAF Cairo
The EuroMed Justice project organised an operational meeting on “Strengthening investigations and adjudication of virtual assets”, at the request of Egypt, France and Sweden under the framework of the TAF (Technical Assistance Facility). This activity was held from 19 to 21 May in Cairo, Egypt, and gathered 33 judges and prosecutors. Thanks to the insightful presentations of all the experts from the three countries, participants gained practical knowledge on handling cryptocurrency wallets, tracing virtual assets across platforms, and preserving digital evidence. They also learned about the different legal systems for seizing and freezing cryptocurrencies, as well as the technical tools for verifying wallet ownership and detecting crimes. Participants indicated that this expertise was critical for addressing the evolving nature of virtual asset-related offenses.
The activity highlighted the importance of international cooperation, of exchanging legal expertise between Egypt and EU Member States, addressing legislative gaps, conducting parallel investigations and sharing evidence to strengthen cases. The activity facilitated meaningful exchanges among colleagues, fostering a shared understanding of challenges and frameworks on virtual assets.
