Mohamed Badar

Dr. Mohamed Badar is Professor of Comparative and International Criminal Law and Islamic Law at Northumbria Law School, Northumbria University, Newcastle. He is the Legal Consultant for Mr. Al Hassan Defence Team before the International Criminal Court; Regional Liaison Officer, Southwest Asia and North Africa, International Bar Association War Crimes Committee; and an expert for UNODC Maritime Crimes Project. He participated in the UNITAD Capacity Building for Iraqi Judges that aims to deepen the knowledge and expertise of key members of the Iraqi Judiciary in the areas of IHL and ICL. In 2017-2019 he acted as a Senior Expert for EUROMED JUSTICE IV, a project funded by the European Commission for enhancing Euro-Mediterranean mutual legal assistance on the investigation and prosecution of complex judicial cases where he co-authored the Handbook on International Cooperation in Criminal Matters in the Southern Partner Countries

He previously served as Senior Prosecutor and Judge in Egypt (1997-2006) and was a member of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry and has participated in the judicial reform in Afghanistan together with Professor M Cherif Bassiouni and Justice Hatem Fouad. He holds a Ph.D. in comparative and international criminal law from the National University of Ireland, Galway, a first-class honours LL.M. degree in international human rights from the same university, a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) and a Bachelor of Police Sciences from the Police Academy, Cairo, and a Diploma in international legal relations from Ain Shams University, Cairo. He has published extensively on issues related to comparative and international criminal law, and his work has been cited by international and national criminal courts. His recent work on hate and fear propaganda appears in the Nordic Journal of Human Rights, International Criminal Law Review and International Journal of Human Rights.
